About me

I am a senior reporter at the Financial Times, a role I have held since July 2021. I now lead the FT's 'computational journalism' team — a group of reporters, engineers and data scientists who trial new techniques to tell stories that are beyond the reach of more traditional journalism. 🛰️

I joined the FT in 2008, where I have worked as a leader writer, education correspondent and comment editor. I have, however, spent seven years away - including five as BBC Newsnight's public policy editor.

I have won awards from the Royal Television Society for scoop of the year, news coverage and specialist journalist of the year, as well receiving a BAFTA nomination. I have also won awards from the British Journalism Awards, Royal Statistical Society and the Harold Wincott Foundation.
